A group of us go to El
Mariachi to load up on Mexican food and margaritas before Tall Timmy's
directorial debut at the Strawdog Theater upstairs. The play is called Judy's
Scary Little Christmas and depicts a live special hosted by Judy
Garland. Her various friends stop by and sing songs (natch) and get
drunk, and it's really funny, even if i don't catch half the references.
"You don't even know who these people are!" Catty says, all
high and might, as if that's an insult. (There's a running joke that i
didn't grow up in front of the television set -- i was too busy playing
make-believe in the woods behind my house.)
Our friend Derek does wonders as Bing Crosby. "I know him from
Christmas specials," i tell Catty.
"You have no idea who Ethel Merman is."
"That's not true -- i saw Airplane!" i protest.
And any time the chick playing Ethel opens her (big) mouth, i can't help
but laugh, and the dude playing Liberace just needs to make a face and
we practically pee our pants. David Cerda stretches his acting chops and
breaks out his Joan Crawford garbs again.
The second act gets all Twilight Zoney and downright melancholic -- but
it all ties up in a nice little bow.
